The IRS routes on your principal business, office or agency. If you formed the entity in Delaware, Wyoming or Nevada but run it from Oklahoma, you use the Ogden center above. Filing on the basis of your state of incorporation is the single most common routing mistake.

Your next deadline
For a calendar-year business electing for 2027, the deadline is March 15, 2027. You can file at any time during 2026 for a 2027 effective date. There is no extension. How the deadline is calculated.
Where you register for payroll in Oklahoma
An S corporation has to run payroll for its working owners, and that means a state registration on top of the federal election.
(1) Withholding: register a withholding tax account with the Oklahoma Tax Commission through OkTAP (oktap.tax.ok.gov) using the New Business Registration; account ID typically issued within about five days when registering online. (2) Unemployment insurance/SUTA: register with the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission (OESC) through EZ Tax Express (eztaxexpress.oesc.state.ok.us). (3) SEPARATE from payroll withholding: if the S corp has nonresident shareholders, it must also register for nonresident member withholding using Form OW-11, Registration for Oklahoma Withholding for Nonresident Members — this is a distinct account from the wage withholding account.
Before you send it
- Sign and date page 1 by hand. The IRS did not make those boxes fillable, so they cannot be typed.
- Have every owner sign and date Column K on page 2. A typed name is not a consent, and a missing one is the most common rejection reason.
- If mailing, send the original rather than a photocopy, and use certified mail with return receipt.
The full pre-send checklist covers printing, copies and what to keep as proof.
What goes wrong in Oklahoma
Blowing the nonresident-shareholder withholding. An Oklahoma S corp with even one out-of-state shareholder must register on Form OW-11, withhold 4.75% of that shareholder's Oklahoma distributive share (not of cash actually distributed), remit it, file Form WTP-10003, and issue Form 500-B — unless the shareholder files Form OW-15. DIY owners almost never do this, and the tax is assessed against the corporation. The making-the-PTE-election version of the same mistake: the Form 586 election is BINDING UNTIL REVOKED, and revocation cannot be done on the 512-S and is only retroactive to the start of the year if filed within 2 months and 15 days. Runner-up scheduling trap: the 512-S is due ~April 15 (30 days after the federal date), not March 15 — and it must be e-filed, so a paper return is not a valid filing.
Filing from a different state?

Internal Revenue Submission Processing Center 1973 Rulon White Blvd. Ogden, UT 84201Fax or mail?
Faxing is faster and gives you an immediate transmission report. Certified mail with return receipt gives you dated proof of filing, which is stronger evidence if the IRS later says it never arrived. Keep whichever proof you get — it is the only thing that establishes your filing date. If you mail it, send the original rather than a photocopy.
Form 2553 cannot be e-filed. Mail or fax is the only way to submit it.

Does Oklahoma need anything beyond the federal election?
No entity-level income tax in the normal case and NO franchise tax (repealed after tax year 2023) — but mandatory 4.75% withholding on nonresident shareholders' distributive shares is a real entity-level cash obligation. Oklahoma automatically recognizes the federal S election; there is no separate state election form. Per the Form 512-S packet: "All corporations having an election in effect under Subchapter S of the IRC engaged in business or deriving income from property…
